New Self-Cloning Lizard Found in Vietnam Restaurant: All-female species reproduces via virgin birth, new study says.
Leiolepis ngovantrii, is the Latin name for a lizard that, unfortunately for the lizard, is a popular food item in Vietnam, and has been for a very long time. But just discovered by science, and found to be self-cloing, which isn't all that unusual in the world of lizards:
Single-gender lizards aren't that much of an oddity: About one percent of lizards can reproduce by parthenogenesis, meaning the females spontaneously ovulate and clone themselves to produce offspring with the same genetic blueprint.
